Legacy or Burden? What Are You Really Leaving Your Kids?

‍

What Are You Really Leaving Your Kids?

Every business owner says they want to leave a legacy.

That's one of the reasons we started our companies in the first place. We wanted to provide for our families, create opportunities, and build something that would last.

But here's a question most owners never stop to ask:

What are you actually leaving behind?

A valuable business?

Or a business that only works because you're still showing up every day?

Those are two very different things.

Hard Work Isn't the Same as a Legacy

Most cabinet shop owners didn't inherit a business.

They built one.

They worked nights and weekends. They took the difficult jobs nobody else wanted. They solved problems on the fly, hired employees, bought equipment, and slowly built a reputation for quality work.

That kind of dedication deserves respect.

But somewhere along the way, many owners unknowingly became the most important employee in the company.

Every question comes back to them.

Every customer wants to talk to them.

Every production issue needs their approval.

Every fire ends up on their desk.

The business grows but so does the dependency.

When the Owner Becomes the Bottleneck

Here's the uncomfortable truth.

If your business can't function without you for a week, it probably doesn't have systems.

It has you.

That's exhausting.

It also makes the business harder to grow, harder to sell, and much harder to pass on to the next generation.

Many owners tell me they want their children to take over someday.

Then I ask another question.

Why would they want to?

They've watched you miss family dinners.

They've seen the late-night phone calls.

They've watched every vacation get interrupted.

If all they see is stress, pressure, and responsibility, they're not looking at an opportunity.

They're looking at a burden.

Think Like an Owner, Not Just a Technician

One of the most powerful ideas we teach is Revenue Responsibility Per Hour (RR/H).

It's a simple way of asking yourself:

"What level of work should I really be doing?"

As your company grows, your role has to change.

The owner who spends the day installing cabinets, chasing deliveries, or answering every employee question isn't working at the level the business needs.

Your highest value isn't swinging the hammer.

It's building leaders.

Creating systems.

Making strategic decisions.

Removing obstacles before they become expensive problems.

That's how businesses become valuable.

Systems Create Freedom

Many owners think systems take away flexibility.

The opposite is true.

Systems create consistency.

Consistency creates trust.

Trust allows you to delegate.

Delegation gives you time.

And time gives you the freedom to think about the future instead of constantly reacting to today.

That's where real growth happens.

Not because you're working harder.

Because the business finally stops depending on one person.

The Business Your Family Deserves

Maybe your kids will run the company one day.

Maybe they won't.

Either way, they should inherit options—not obligations.

A healthy business creates opportunities for the next generation.

A business built around one exhausted owner creates pressure.

The goal isn't simply to build a profitable company.

It's to build a company that can continue serving customers, creating jobs, and supporting your family long after you've stepped away.

That's what a real legacy looks like.

One Question to Think About This Week

If you disappeared for 30 days, what would happen?

Would your team keep moving?

Would customers still be served?

Would projects stay on schedule?

Or would everything stop until you came back?

Your answer tells you whether you're building a business...

...or carrying one.

The good news?

It's never too late to start building systems, developing leaders, and creating a company that works without you.

That's how you turn years of hard work into something your family can truly be proud to inherit.
